What You Need to Know Before a Nose Job

Rhinoplasty: The Procedure for a Perfect Nose

Rhinoplasty is the most effective procedure for modifying the appearance of the face and its expressiveness by improving or correcting the shape of the nose. As the nose is located in the center of the face, after the eyes, it is the first thing noticed.

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that reshapes the form, size, and profile of the nose, corrects aesthetic defects, and gives the face a more harmonious appearance.

It's the procedure with the most significant psychological repercussions due to its impact, and it is advisable not to operate on boys before 18-19 years old and girls before 16-17 years old, that is, before the skeletal development is complete.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Rhinoplasty

What is the cost of rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery technique that allows for reshaping the form and profile of the nose, correcting aesthetic defects, and giving the face a more harmonious appearance. Many people wonder how much a rhinoplasty costs. Certainly, rhinoplasty may seem expensive, but the result of the operation is permanent.

What should you plan for before a rhinoplasty?

Before undergoing rhinoplasty, it's advisable to plan the area of intervention with your surgeon based on the problem to be solved.

  • Septoplasty is an operation aimed at correcting functional problems that hinder breathing, in which the surgeon only intervenes at the level of the septum;
  • Rhinoseptoplasty is performed whenever it is necessary to correct the volume and shape of the nose, including a functional problem. The surgeon then operates on both the nasal pyramid and the septum, or in limited areas such as the tip of the nose or nostrils, the pyramid, the columella;
  • Primary rhinoplasty is nose surgery performed on a patient for the first time;
  • Secondary rhinoplasty involves re-operating on a nose that has already undergone surgery, but whose aesthetic results still need to be perfected;
  • "Augmentation" rhinoplasty is less popular and applies to patients who need to increase the volume of their nose following a nasal trauma with subsequent cartilage resorption;

What should you expect during the pre-operative consultation?

During the pre-operative examination, the patient has the opportunity to express their aesthetic needs, and the surgeon's task is to assess the bone structures, septum, mucous membranes, respiratory function, skin and appendages, profile, and relationships of facial structures. Only in this way can they provide complete and accurate information on the success of the operation and the results that can be obtained.

Computer programs can also be used to give the patient a very precise idea of the final result of their operation. Thus, the surgeon will work with the patient to find the nose shape that best meets their wishes.

It is also important to assess skin thickness, which could limit interventions at the tip. Indeed, thick skin does not allow for a very fine nose tip to be obtained. The procedure, postoperative course, examinations, and investigations to be carried out before proceeding with the operation will be explained. The surgeon will also examine any illnesses the patient may have, as well as any family history of hereditary diseases.

What examinations are necessary before a rhinoplasty?

It is necessary to perform blood tests and paraclinical examinations such as an electrocardiogram, chest X-rays, to abstain from taking anti-inflammatories that reduce healing time and increase the risk of bleeding.

Stop smoking, or at least reduce tobacco consumption, which reduces tissue vascularization and hinders healing. Considered as contraindications to the operation: colds or flu contracted in the days preceding the operation, menstruation. The patient must sign an informed consent form after reading the procedure.

What is the postoperative recovery like?

After rhinoplasty, edema, i.e., swelling and bruising caused by the operation, can be localized in the nose, periorbital area, and cheeks, and can last on average about ten days. During this period, the patient can return to work, avoiding exertion, sudden movements, and excessive temperature changes, as well as the weight of glasses. When the surgeon touches the tip of the nose during rhinoplasty, the final result is visible after about two months, and on the bone structures after about 35 days.

Important Information about Rhinoplasty

  • It's not just a cosmetic procedure: It often corrects functional, respiratory, or post-traumatic problems related to the nasal septum;
  • It takes months for the result to stabilize and a year for complete recovery;
  • Non-surgical rhinoplasty is not an alternative to classic rhinoplasty: Injections of calcium hydroxyapatite or hyaluronic acid are used to modify small defects in the nose, but not to reduce its size. The effect is time-limited (one and a half years) and it is necessary to consult experts. Even with simple injections, there is a risk of compressing the vessels and causing skin necrosis;
  • If performed by surgeons who are not experienced, rhinoplasty can lead to respiratory and functional problems for the patient.
  • The procedure lasts about two hours under general anesthesia;
  • Before rhinoplasty, you must stop taking any medication that causes bleeding;
  • Rhinoplasty techniques differ between men and women, as the expectation of facial contours is different;
  • The nose changes in appearance with age, especially in the case of long noses or noses with prominent alar cartilages: in these cases, it tends to appear larger over time.
