Medical Treatment After a Hair Transplant
Hair Transplant: The Ultimate Solution Against Baldness
Hair transplantation is the most radical solution against alopecia and baldness in terms of effectiveness and patient satisfaction. If all goes well, the procedure is correctly indicated, and the patient follows some basic aftercare, this treatment offers a clear and rapid result.
Although the definitive appearance takes a few months to be observed, the patient enters the operating room with one appearance and leaves with a much better one. Similarly, over the weeks, this satisfaction only increases, as a general rule, because the surgical intervention has reached a high level of technical perfection and allows for completely natural results.
However, it is important to emphasize that to obtain optimal results, it is necessary to perform a series of aftercare procedures after the hair transplant and to keep in mind that patient satisfaction after the operation will largely depend on their compliance.

How Does Alopecia Manifest Itself?
Alopecia Zone
The alopecia zone is the area where there was once hair, but where only the scalp remains completely bare. In other words, it is an area of total baldness. This is where more hair needs to be grafted to recover what has been lost. Good surgical planning before the transplant is necessary to precisely delineate the area to be worked on.
Transition Zone
This is where the patient's own hair persists, but it is already weakened by alopecia. This is what trichologists call the miniaturization process, as the hair fiber is poor and, although there is no total baldness, one can see how the scalp thins. In this area, it is necessary to implant hair so that the final result is totally natural.
Healthy Zone
This is the healthy area where the hair has not yet undergone any changes, but which has a clear probability of falling out over time (generally more than five to ten years). This zone is more difficult to delineate in people under 30 and easier in mature ages. Hair transplantation in this area is generally not possible, as in this case, the roots of healthy hair would be damaged.
Hair loss areas, depending on the type of alopecia diagnosed, may be well-defined in the hairline and crown area or be more extensive or diffuse.
Hair After a Hair Transplant
What does the hair look like after a transplant?
After a hair transplant, we have two types of hair in the grafted area: transplanted hair and transitional hair. The transplanted follicular units are extracted from the so-called donor area, generally located at the back of the head, more precisely at the nape of the neck, given that the hair in this part of the scalp is naturally resistant to androgenetic alopecia.
For this reason, the transplanted hair does not fall out again, whether or not medical treatment against alopecia is carried out. This naturally stronger hair is found in the alopecia area and also in the transition area. It will always retain the same thickness and remain long-term.
What about hair in the transition phase?
In addition to the grafted hair, the transitional hair, which was already present before the procedure, will also be preserved. The surgeon places the follicular units in such a way that the transplanted hair blends with the transitional hair, so that the patient's hair has a natural appearance.
However, since the triggers of alopecia continue to affect this transitional hair, over time this hair will enter the miniaturization process, that is, it will gradually weaken and lose thickness, eventually falling out if appropriate medical treatment is not carried out. Thus, the patient will only retain the transplanted hair and lose the rest.
What happens if I don't undergo medical treatment after the transplant?
As already mentioned, transplanted hair is for life, but the hair we still have is gradually lost due to alopecia. If we do not undergo medical treatment after the transplant, the patient will most likely lose hair density and sooner or later find themselves at the same starting point, that is, as they were before the transplant.
For this reason, it is important to insist and inform the patient that the hormonal factors that lead to alopecia persist in the non-transplanted hair, as they remain vulnerable there at least until the patient reaches 50-55 years of age. It is therefore advisable to maintain medical treatment at least until that age.
Benefits of Following Medical Treatment After a Hair Transplant
Medical treatment for alopecia prevents hair loss in the transition zone and hair loss in healthy hair areas.
It improves the quality of the non-transplanted hair that still remains in the transition zone, thickening it and increasing the hair density of the entire area.
It prevents baldness in other areas where hair has not yet fallen out, but where the probability of losing it is high, given that they belong to the typical pattern of androgenetic alopecia, for example, the top of the head.
Can I undergo several hair transplants?
Of course, a person could choose not to undergo medical treatment after undergoing a hair transplant. However, you should know that this decision implies the inevitable loss of hair in other non-transplanted areas for the reasons we have explained and because, in addition, hair transplantation cannot be repeated indefinitely, as some patients sometimes do who wish to have surgery and forget their hair problems forever.
