Facial Liposuction: What Is It?
A Tired Look?
When your face appears tired, grayish, and dull, it's a clear sign your skin needs help. The reasons for such a loss of tone and radiance are varied, but by playing it safe, you can take action. Let's see how.
Especially during the winter months, the skin on our face is subjected to a number of stresses. Due to the cold, vasoconstriction occurs. With reduced blood supply, the skin receives less oxygen and nutrients, resulting in dry, dehydrated, and dull skin.
Added to external factors are new habits and increased connection to all sorts of electronic devices. Indeed, constant exposure to blue light, the invisible light component between 400 and 490 nm which, among other sources, is emitted by digital devices, works against the skin. Smartworking, the many hours spent in front of the computer, and free time spent watching one television series after another have certainly contributed to the epidermis being severely affected. The most common result is a loss of radiance and vigor as well as a gray appearance, making the skin look older. However, facial fat is also a factor that can compromise the harmonious and youthful appearance of facial features.
What are the causes of excess facial fat?
The face is fatty for one or both of the following reasons:
- Body fat percentage is too high;
- Facial structure and genetics predispose the subject to a round face;
Most body fat is stored just under the skin and is distributed to varying degrees in different areas, including in parts that most people ignore, such as the face, fingers, and feet. Most of us have subtle facial features, to the point that it doesn't take much fat to disguise them. That's why we need to be thin enough to see noticeable changes in the appearance of our face.
In particular, most women need to have a body fat percentage of around 20% before seeing a noticeable change from a round face to a sculpted face. However, while losing weight allows you to gain some muscle definition all over your body, it's unfortunately difficult to say whether this will give you the facial features you desire.
Indeed, the structure of our faces differs from individual to individual. Some people have angular features, accentuated cheekbones, prominent jaws, etc., others have a rounder face, without obvious angularity. Faces with more angular features naturally appear thinner than round faces, but while we can reduce the amount of fat on the face, no diet or exercise can change the anatomy. The conclusion is therefore that some people will always have a thinner face than others, regardless of their body fat percentage.
The Objectives of the Operation
If a double chin is present, it is recommended to start there. There are several surgical techniques for double chin liposuction, including gentle techniques, to remove excess skin and tissue in the lower part of the face, such as laser liposuction. Removing the tissues that "wrap" the face gives the whole face more finesse. Facial oval liposuction can give the face a less rounded appearance. If the cheeks are very chubby, a buccal fat removal could significantly slim the face.
The typical nose of round faces is usually small. In some cases, it may be necessary to work on a rhinofiller to make it a little fuller and restore balance and harmony after enlarging the cheekbones. If, on the other hand, the problem is that the shape of the eye is too round and not elongated enough, a foxy-eyes approach can be performed to correct this small defect as much as possible.
How is facial liposuction performed?
Facial liposuction is performed under local anesthesia (unlike full liposuction which is always performed under general anesthesia). Two to five incisions of a few millimeters are made in hidden areas of the face, through which the excess fat is aspirated using cannulas. Only one stitch is needed, then the dressing is removed after one week.
Results and Post-Operative Care
It is clear that the final result depends on the expertise of the cosmetic surgeon. When you want to modify your appearance to reshape your facial oval, it is essential to call upon a surgeon experienced in remodeling.
Slimming a round face is possible by working on the different elements of the face. And try, rather than making changes, to find new dimensions, lines, and proportions.
Other Possible Operations
There are mainly two operations that can be associated with facial liposuction to slim it down:
- When the patient presents with fat accumulation under the chin and in the submandibular region, chin liposuction, not of the face itself but of the neck, may be advised, especially if performed in conjunction with repositioning of the superficial muscle layer (platysma) and removal of excess skin;
- If the patient presents with an accumulation of fatty tissue located deep in the supra-zygomatic position, in the center of the "cheek." This is called the "Bichat ball" or buccal fat. Its removal may be indicated when, by its volume, it contributes particularly significantly to a full and rounded face. This argues against a successful facelift which would require the volumes to be placed higher than the rather low position of this buccal fat accumulation. As well as lighter tissues to lift. But it is quite different from the current trend among very young people to remove the Bichat ball to have a more hollowed and "drawn" face. And thus correct the slightly "chubby" appearance which is physiologically typical of childhood. But which, in most cases, will disappear on its own in the years following youth;
