Post-operative Recommendations for Adult Circumcision

On the Day of Circumcision

To ensure smooth healing and minimal disruption to your routine, it's crucial to follow your doctor's recommendations after circumcision. About two to three hours after waking up, the doctor usually discharges the patient following a check-up and questions about the patient's health. In most cases, the man feels well. Nausea and dizziness after anesthesia can be an exception. Apply ice to the groin for 10 to 20 minutes (over clothing), 4 hours after surgery. The cold reduces discomfort and can be repeated every 1 to 2 hours at most. The day after surgery, it is recommended not to drive and to avoid activities requiring concentration. Set aside a few days for recovery: rest and sleep are imperative.

The Day After Circumcision

From the day after the procedure, perform daily dressings with disinfectant liquids or creams until the check-up. Immediately after the dressing, protect the penis with sterile gauze. Some swelling and redness of the penis (edema) is common, especially in the first few days. At this stage, edema can make complete retraction of the glans difficult (and painful). Subcutaneous hematomas may also appear.

The First Three Nights After Circumcision

The first three days after circumcision surgery are crucial. For quick and worry-free healing, carefully follow the surgeon's hygiene instructions. This includes refraining from bathing or showering within 48 hours of the operation, and avoiding baths for about 2 to 3 weeks. However, a short shower is permitted, ensuring the wound is protected from direct water jets. Gently pat dry with a clean cloth or sterile gauze. Rinse the surgical area with a disinfectant solution using a bidet. Dab the wound with sterile gauze and apply any prescribed cream; repeat twice a day. Change the dressing regularly throughout the day. Wash your hands meticulously before each procedure. Monitor urination frequency and alert your doctor if you experience any difficulty. Check for signs of infection, such as redness, pain, swelling, bleeding, or yellow-green discharge. Contact your doctor promptly if such symptoms occur.

Aftercare During the Week Following Circumcision

The surgical wound usually heals in 7 to 10 days (more likely 10). Stitches fall out spontaneously, usually after a few weeks. During the first week, doctors strongly recommend rest, even from work.

You will gradually resume normal habits. Before leaving the medical facility, you will receive information for your recovery: recovery time, healing time, good practices, instructions to avoid, the post-operative follow-up program, and signs to watch out for in case of potential complications.

Although circumcision is a fairly simple procedure, it is essential to monitor for any complications during the first week after surgery.

Signs indicating poor recovery include significant redness, fever, unexpected bleeding, intense and persistent pain, and a throbbing sensation. Report these symptoms to a healthcare professional.

Aftercare During the Second and Third Weeks After Circumcision

The recovery period generally lasts 2 to 3 weeks. To accelerate healing, abstain from sexual intercourse and activity that could lead to a strong erection for at least two weeks. Avoid hot baths, saunas, or swimming pools for at least two weeks. Limit physical activities such as sports, prolonged walking, and weight lifting. Wear tight, elastic underwear to prevent rubbing. Follow the urologist's advice regarding daily dressings and hygiene measures. Once the first phase of recovery is complete, rinse the surgical area twice a day with running water and keep the area dry. Avoid excessive manipulation.

Follow the doctor's instructions and take antibiotic treatment if necessary. The healthcare professional can prescribe analgesics to relieve pain. The length of convalescence depends on the patient's effort and cooperation. Good hygiene and following the urologist's recommendations can reduce recovery time and avoid complications. Ask your surgeon for day-by-day or before-and-after photos.

How Long Does It Take to Heal After Circumcision?

Healing time varies. For complete healing, follow the doctor's instructions for about 1 to 2 weeks. Comply with post-operative care such as cleaning and good hygiene. Avoid strenuous physical activity and wear loose clothing. Consult your doctor if any concerns or complications arise. This healing period is crucial for successful recovery.
