IVG: Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy
IVG refers to induced abortion for non-medical reasons due to an unwanted pregnancy. There are two types of voluntary termination of pregnancy: medical abortion and surgical abortion.
Pregnancy termination is a regularly requested procedure in Tunisia. It is considered a minor operation from a physical point of view, but psychological support is still recommended.
Tunisia Destination Santé guarantees your IVG discreetly and at the best price.
Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy
Often, the terms voluntary termination of pregnancy and abortion are used interchangeably; in reality, abortion more generally means the expulsion of a non-viable fetus; this event can be spontaneous, that is, due to various pathologies affecting the mother or the product of conception itself, or induced, with a wide variety of reasons, intentions, means and circumstances.
The issue of voluntary abortion has always existed and has always been discussed in ethical terms, based on the commonly shared principle of the illegality of suppressing human life.
In relatively recent times and in the context of evolved social communities, the issue has been approached from different points of view and with a different cultural approach until, gradually, in more and more countries, conditions and methods have been defined by law by which a woman could terminate her pregnancy.
How IVG is Performed
A woman who wishes to have an IVG can contact a gynecologist at the clinic or hospital, her general practitioner or a trusted doctor: she will be given a copy of the certificate, also signed by her, certifying the state of pregnancy and the successful IVG request.
IVG is performed according to different but equally effective procedures, depending on the gestational age and the woman’s state of health.
Pharmacological interruption can be performed within seven weeks of pregnancy, while surgical interruption can be performed within eleven weeks and six days, calculated, in both cases, from the first day of the last period and including the seven-day waiting period after signing the IVG request certificate.
In both cases, an outpatient visit will precede the surgical intervention to check that there are no contraindications to the administration of the medication or to surgery, to sign the informed consent to treatment and to schedule the hospitalization.
Pharmacological IVG
Pharmacological IVG requires hospitalization for the administration of two drugs (RU486/mifepristone and misoprostol) 48 hours apart, and a follow-up visit to check the woman’s health and the state of the pregnancy. It is important to ensure that the uterus empties completely once the procedure is finished. If this is not the case, a uterine cavity revision (RCU) will be necessary, which is a minor surgical procedure that removes what is still present in the uterus.
Surgical IVG
Surgical IVG is a minor operation, performed under local or general anesthesia, which consists of aspirating the embryonic and placental material from the uterine cavity. As in the previous case, it is essential to reassess the woman before her discharge from the hospital, to verify the complete emptying and cleaning of the uterus.
Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, fever or chills may occur after both surgeries.
