What is Tuberculosis Treatment in Tunisia?
Generally, to best treat tuberculosis, your doctor will prescribe the antibiotics suited to your situation. To establish a precise diagnosis and determine the antibiotics to take, a series of medical examinations will be performed, or a biopsy will be scheduled to collect samples.
Surgery may also be considered to perform a resection: this surgical procedure can be performed either to resect a residual lesion following antibiotic treatment, or to directly resect the infection when it is well localized.
Following an initial diagnosis, and depending on your case or by analyzing your progress, your pulmonologist will be able to decide on the best procedure to follow.

Which Patients Are Concerned?
Tuberculosis can affect people of all ages, but those most at risk are those with a weakened immune system (particularly due to malnutrition, diabetes or HIV), as well as smokers. Individuals undergoing specific treatments may also be at higher risk of contracting this disease.
The symptoms of tuberculosis can vary from one patient to another; generally, the most recurrent signs of the presence of the infection are the following:
- The presence of a more or less significant fever, which persists over a long period;
- A persistent cough, which also causes sputum (this sputum may contain traces of blood);
- Fatigue, which can be mild or significant, with rapid shortness of breath;
- Painful sensations in the chest;
- Loss of appetite with weight loss;
However, the symptoms mentioned above can have a multitude of causes, and the simple observation of these problems does not necessarily mean that it is tuberculosis. Only a precise medical diagnosis can confirm the presence or absence of a tuberculous infection.
Tuberculosis Treatment: Medical Examinations
First, the pulmonologist will have a discussion with you to discuss your symptoms and any other possible pathologies you suffer from, and the medical treatment you are already taking if any. Subsequently, a clinical examination is carried out, and specialists from other medical disciplines, such as a radiologist, may intervene to clarify the diagnosis.
Different medical examinations may be requested to establish the diagnosis and to be able to decide on the best course of action; the tests requested will vary from one patient to another, and will depend on the type of infection.
- Blood test: notably to assess your liver and kidney functions, and to see if you do not suffer from other diseases or infections, such as HIV or hepatitis B or C;
- Sputum sample: this sample allows for the detection of pulmonary tuberculosis;
- Chest X-ray: generally, a chest X-ray is performed on all patients suffering from tuberculosis;
- Medical scan: the medical scan will be requested depending on the patient’s situation and the type of infection;
- Urine collection: this examination will detect the presence of kidney tuberculosis;
Different Sampling Techniques
Biopsy is a frequently used method to detect the presence of tuberculosis in the lungs or other organs of the body. This procedure consists of collecting a small piece of tissue or organ in the area potentially affected by the infection; this collection can be carried out using different procedures:
- Surgical biopsy: the surgeon performs a classic surgical operation under general anesthesia; incisions are made to directly access the organ concerned and to collect a small piece;
- Biopsy by endoscopy: the surgeon inserts a tube equipped with a mini-camera, which will allow him to see on a screen in real time the inside of the patient’s body. Once he has reached the organ concerned, he will use a specific tool to collect the tissue he needs;
- Biopsy by puncture: during this procedure, the surgeon performs the collection directly with a needle;
Once the biopsy is performed, the collected piece will be taken directly to the laboratory for analysis, and thus it will be possible to confirm the diagnosis.
