Surgical Abortion

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion involves the use of an abortion pill, RU486. It contains the hormone mifepristone, a chemical steroid that induces abortion during the first two months of pregnancy. RU486 is supported by misoprostol (or gemeprost) which is taken two days after the administration of the abortion pill. The abortion occurs within one to two days (with bleeding preceding the second pill) and lasts a little over a week.

After the Abortion

After your abortion, there is a risk of inflammation in your abdomen. As long as you continue to bleed, you should not take baths or swim in the sea/lakes or pools. You should also not use tampons or have unprotected sex.

Your body will take a few days to adjust to not being pregnant. Any nausea, breast engorgement, etc. that you experience may therefore continue for about a week after the procedure. If these symptoms do not subside, contact your general practitioner or the hospital to ensure that you are not still pregnant, even after your abortion.
